Projects

This section highlights my leadership experience in various student publications, including Word magazine, The Southwestern Sun newspaper, and El Sol magazine. Through these roles, I led editorial teams, managed production schedules, and oversaw the creation of impactful content, demonstrating my skills in writing, editing, and project management.

WORD

As Managing Editor for Word Issue 54, my first issue in the role, I led the editorial process with a focus on precision and cohesion. I conducted first-round edits on every article, ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment with our artistic vision. I worked closely with the design team to ensure each article harmonized with its visual counterpart, elevating the overall presentation. In addition to overseeing editorial tasks, I managed multiple teams—including social media, advertising, and poetry editors—driving collaboration and ensuring deadlines were met. I also planned and taught lessons to new writers on essential journalism skills, including conducting interviews and mastering basic AP style. My leadership in coordinating production, maintaining high editorial standards, and mentoring new talent helped shape a polished, cohesive issue.

El Sol XIII

As Associate Editor-in-Chief for El Sol Issue XIII, the sister magazine of The Southwestern Sun, I played a key role in compiling the best stories from the year to highlight the culture and community of that time. I created the short list of stories, ensuring each piece represented the essence of the publication, and collaborated closely with the design team to finalize layout and visual elements. My leadership helped craft an issue that captured the heart of our community.

Awards won by this issue:

  • Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award (the collegiate Pulitzer Prize) for El Sol Magazine
  • College Media Association National Pinnacle Award, Best College Magazine
  • Association of Educators of Journalism and Mass Communication, Best Collegiate Magazine
  • Associated Collegiate Press, Best of Show, Magazine Design

The Sun

As Editor-in-Chief of The Southwestern Sun for Issues 3-5 during the 2022-2023 school year, I led the publication through a period of transformation. I managed all beat teams, oversaw content development, and handled internal conflicts to ensure smooth operations. A key focus of my time was leading a redesign of the magazine, making it more modern and digitally friendly to better engage our audience. My leadership was pivotal in maintaining editorial standards and aligning content with the publication’s evolving vision. Prior to becoming EIC, I served as Arts Editor for Issues 1-2, where I worked to rebuild connections with the arts community on campus post-COVID, improving the quality of the arts section and mentoring new writers along the way.
